Interschool Debating - Round One Kicks Off

22 March 2018

Emmanuel College provided eight teams across four grades to the first round of Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) debating for 2018 on Wednesday 14th March at Williamstown High School - Bayview St Campus.

Students debated the propositions "That Australia should implement a universal basic income" in A Grade, "That we should limit the number of government-funded university places" in B Grade, "That we should ban the sale of all cars powered by fossil fuels by 2025" in C Grade and "That the Olympics should expand to include non-sporting events" in D Grade.

After weeks of discussion and preparation, with students giving up free time at lunch and working after school, all teams were in good shape to face some very talented opposition.
This year was the SPC (Year 8) C Grade team very first debate and they presented as a forthright, cohesive and intelligent team. Unfortunately, on the night, they missed out on the top score by only one mark. The Notre Dame A Grade team won their debate and continue to build on the strong performances of 2017. The students that participated acquitted themselves well and Emmanuel College gave a strong showing in all debates which were held in competitive good spirits. The experience gave students a good sense of what is expected in upcoming rounds and the adjudicators provided invaluable feedback to lay down some stepping stones on a path to success.

The next round will be held at the same venue on May 9th, 2018, and we look forward to seeing just how far these students can grow.
